How early can your child receive orthodontic treatment?

According to American Association of Orthodontics, your child’s first visit can be around the time they turn just 7 years old! By seeing an orthodontist this early, you can receive valuable information of what kind of treatment will be needed for correcting their teeth alignment. Some of your child’s baby teeth will most likely be gone by this time, and you’ll be informed of any early treatments that can be done to fix dental problems before they become permanent. Both time and money can be saved by taking orthodontic action early! If your child’s orthodontist determines that no early treatment is recommended, you’ll have an idea of the best time for treatment to begin.

Phase 01

Interceptive Phase

Beginning your child’s orthodontic treatment before their teenage years can save both time and money. Orthodontic treatment used to begin in the teenage years at the earliest, but now with advanced technology treatment can begin before a child has all of their permanent teeth. By receiving treatment early, more space can be created in their mouth for their permanent teeth.

Bite issues can be corrected early, extractions can be avoided, tooth decay can be prevented and your child can have a boost of confidence before they reach their teenage years. The length of Phase 1 is typically between 6 and 18 months, depending on recommended treatment. Your child’s orthodontist will most likely recommend a break before moving onto Phase 2.

Phase 02

Comprehensive Phase

Braces work by exerting continuous, light pressure on the teeth, which in turn, actually changes the shape of the bone. The goal of Phase II treatment is to move teeth into their ideal, permanent position.

Traditional Braces

Phase 2 is the beginning of braces! Traditional braces are one of the most effective options for children. Treatment time will vary depending on how much work is needed to fully straighten your child’s smile. The average treatment time is usually between 18-30 months. Once braces are placed, visits will be scheduled every 4-6 weeks.

Children often enjoy choosing the color of their elastic band, which can be changed at each visit! Once this phase is complete, your child will have a new and improved smile that can be maintained through teenage years and into adulthood.

Ceramic Clear Braces

For braces that bring less attention to your child’s smile, ceramic clear braces are a great option! Ceramic is used in place of traditional metal to help the braces blend in more naturally with their smile.

Ceramic clear braces work the same as traditional braces, providing great results by the end of treatment, but often need to be closely monitored as the ceramic material is easier to break or may stain from foods and drinks.
