The Play Group Theatre

A non-profit organization called The Play Group Theatre (PGT) is based in White Plains, New York, and it’s committed to giving kids access to high-quality theater education and performances. PGT has been a mainstay in the Westchester County theater scene since its establishment in 1995, providing classes, workshops, and performance opportunities for students ages 4–17.

PGT stands out for a variety of reasons, including its dedication to diversity and inclusivity. In order to serve the diverse population of Westchester County, they offer classes and programs in multiple languages and work to provide opportunities for students from all backgrounds, regardless of their financial situation. In order to make sure that all students feel seen and represented on stage, PGT also gives top priority to casting and production decisions that reflect the diversity of the world around us.

Acting, singing, and dancing are just a few of the classes and workshops that PGT provides all year long. These classes are intended to help students develop their skills and gain confidence on stage and are instructed by seasoned professionals who work in the theater business. In addition, PGT provides specialized courses in subjects like Shakespeare, improvisation, and stage combat, allowing students to learn about various facets of the theater industry.

Along with classes, PGT also puts on a number of performances every year, from plays to old-fashioned musicals. PGT students fully stage and perform in these productions, giving them the chance to put the skills they have learned in class to use in a real-world production setting. PGT productions are renowned for their top-notch performances, which feature young actors with talent who give their all on stage.

The annual summer musical, which includes a sizable cast of students from all over Westchester County, is one of PGT’s most well-liked productions. The local community always looks forward to these productions, and they frequently sell out very quickly. Recent summer musicals have featured well-liked productions like “Newsies,” “Mary Poppins,” and “The Little Mermaid.”

In order to provide theater education to underserved populations, PGT also has a strong commitment to community outreach, working in collaboration with nearby schools and organizations. They have created a program specifically for students with special needs, offering them a safe and encouraging environment in which to explore the world of theater. They also offer workshops and performances at nearby schools.

The Play Group Theatre has received numerous awards and commendations over the years in recognition of its outstanding work in the theater industry. They received the ArtsWestchester Arts Award in 2018 in recognition of their dedication to giving local youth high-quality arts education. The New York State Assembly has also honored them for their contributions to the neighborhood’s cultural fabric.

PGT is more than just a theater program for many students; it’s a second home. Students feel a sense of community because of the welcoming and inclusive environment because they frequently participate in classes and productions year after year. PGT graduates have gone on to pursue lucrative careers in the arts, with many enrolling in renowned theater programs and getting cast in Broadway shows.

The Play Group Theatre is a significant contribution to the White Plains community and the larger Westchester County theater scene, to sum up. They are leaders in the field thanks to their dedication to inclusivity and diversity, as well as to giving young people access to high-quality theater education and productions. PGT is a great starting point for students who want to learn more about the theater industry.
